Gladewater High School
Spring Hill High School
The Spring Hill 9th grade team opened up their district schedule by hosting the Gladewater Bears at Panther Stadium. The Panthers took the opening kickoff and established their run game with Nick Stewart. However, after getting a couple of first downs, Stewart coughed the ball up and the Bears started around their 30 yard line. The Panther defense stopped the Bears and Gladewater turned the ball over on downs. Unfortunately, Spring Hill failed to convert on a pass attempt from Carter Dixon to Grant Fisher and Gladewater assumed possession on downs. The Bears were able to find a crease in the Panther defense and scored on a 63 yard run. The 2 point conversion was good and the Bears took an early 8-0 lead.
Spring Hill failed to move the ball and was forced to punt. The Bears fumbled to punt return and Curtis Crowe fell on the loose ball for the Panthers. The first quarter ended on a big run by Brody Barnhill to get inside the Gladewater 15 yard line. Michael Marrs then scored on the second play of the second quarter as he scored from 8 yards out. The 2 point conversion failed and the score became 8-6 Gladewater.
The following possession started for Gladewater at their own 33, where they were able to take the ball around the left side and score their second TD of the game. The conversion attempt failed as Brody Barnhill stopped the runner in the backfield. The Panthers offense had troubles as the ball was given back to Gladewater on an ensuing fumble. The defense returned the favor as Carson Barnhill and Tavion Sterling combined to swarm the Bear runner and cause a fumble. Nick Stewart then had a big run around the left side to the Gladewater 15 yard line. Marrs was able to get the ball inside of the 10 yard line, but a penalty and an incompletion on 4th down ended the drive. The Panther defense was up to the challenge and a big tackle by Brody Barnhill forced a Gladewater punt. With time ticking away, Spring Hill used completions from Dixon to Jake Couch and Corvin Withrow to move the ball into Bear territory. A final desperation pass fell incomplete as the clock ran out for halftime with Gladewater holding on to their lead 14-6.
The Spring Hill defense started the third quarter with a much tougher stand, forcing a turnover on downs at midfield. The Panther offense was unable to take advantage of the field position and punted the ball back to Gladewater. However, Eli Bartel tipped a Gladewater pass attempt and the ball was intercepted by Carson Barnhill to end the 3rd quarter with the score unchanged.
Michael Marrs started the final period with a run that would not be denied from 17 yards out for his second TD of the game. Stewart converted the 2 point try and the score was tied at 14. Gladewater then drove the field and ate up most of the time, scoring the winning TD and 2 point conversion with under 2:00 left in the game. The Panthers made a valiant attempt to score, but penalties and little time were too much. Spring Hill fell in defeat 22-14. Their record is now 4-1-1.
The Panthers will travel to Pittsburg next Thursday for their match up with the Pirates. The game kicks off at 5 pm.
