Girls Varsity Softball · Softball Falls Short To Sabine


The Panther Softball team traveled to take on the Sabine Cardinals on Friday night. Sam Schott got the Panthers started with a walk and Kaycee Campbell bunted her over to 2nd base and was safe herself on an error by the Cardinals. Sadie Sparks grounded out, scoring Schott. However Campbell would be picked off of 2nd base, and the inning ended on a strikeout. The Cardinals found more success in their at bats as they scored 8 runs in the inning.

Sabine would add two more runs in the second inning, moving to a 10-1 lead before the Panthers found the plate again in the top of the 3rd inning. Schott doubled to center field and then stole 3rd base. Campbell then hit a sacrifice fly to left field, allowing Schott to score for the Panthers. The Panthers got into the groove in the 3rd inning getting their three outs without giving up a run.  Both teams were unable to score until the top of the sixth inning. Spring Hill clawed back into the game with solid hitting. Rachel Doss led the inning off with a double to center field. Hadleigh Childers then singled to center, advancing Doss to 3rd base. Avery Mercer then hit a fly ball that was misplayed by the Cardinal defender, scoring Doss and allowing Childers to advance. Both base runners then advanced on a passed ball by the catcher. Karlie Smith then roped a single to center field, scoring both runners to make the score 10-5. Sam Schott then singled, advancing Smith to 2nd base. Campbell walked to load the bases. Smith scored on a passed ball, and the other runners advanced. Sparks then grounded out, scoring Schott and advancing Campbell. Campbell scored on an error, closing the gap to 10-8.

Unfortunately, Sabine was able to score four runs in the bottom of the inning, expanding their lead. Spring Hill was then unable to plate any runners in their last at bat. Sadie Sparks took the loss in the circle for Spring Hill. She pitched 2 innings, giving up 6 runs (3 earned) on 6 hits. She walked one and struck out 2. Sam Schott pitched 4 innings, giving up 8 runs (4 earned) on three hits. She walked five and struck out 3.

Schott led the hitting for the Panthers, going 2-3, scoring every time she was on the bases. Doss, Childers, and Smith also had hits for Spring Hill.

The Panthers (3-6) will travel to Rusk to take on the Eagles on Tuesday, March 5. Game time is set for 6:00 pm.
