The Panther Sub-Varsity White team took on the Atlanta Rabbits at Panther Stadium on Thursday afternoon in a battle of former district foes. The Panthers didn’t wait long to make a big play as Brennan Ferguson intercepted a Rabbit pass attempt on the first drive. Ferguson did fumble the ball on the return attempt, but teammate Kaden McFaul was able to gather the ball for the Panthers. After some successful runs by Jordan Jones and Grayson Crews, the Rabbit defense stopped Spring Hill and the Panthers turned the ball over on downs. A McFaul tackle for loss and a Trevor Hollins pass break up forced and Atlanta punt to end the first quarter.
Grayson Crews was tackled on a pass attempt and Favour Otujor was able to run the defender down and make a touchdown saving tackle for Spring Hill. The Panthers got the ball back and Jones had a couple of nice runs to move the Panther offense back up the field. Spring Hill was forced to eventually punt the ball back to Atlanta. Brody Turner blitzed into the Rabbit backfield on a subsequent play and forced a fumble that was recovered by the Panthers. QB Ferguson was able to get a run around the left side for a few yards. On the next play, Ferguson then hit Crews on a 25 yd pass into the endzone for a Panther TD. Ashton Thomas was converted the PAT and Spring Hill led 7-0. Ferguson then turned around and intercepted a Rabbit pass attempt as the clock hit 0:00 to end the half.
Neither team could manage much offense in the second half. Christian Jeter sacked the Rabbit QB on Atlanta’s first possession of the second half. Atlanta’s offensive drive was stalled by the Panther defense and Spring Hill took possession. A Jones run and a pass completion from Ferguson to James Henry Thomas wasn’t enough to get Spring Hill a first down.
Spring Hill punted to open the final quarter. Turner and McFaul again gave the Rabbit offense fits, and Spring Hill regained the ball. A long run by Otujor was negated on a penalty by the Panthers. A fumble on the snap gave the ball back to Atlanta. The Rabbits were able to move the ball inside the Panther 5 yard line, but a valiant defensive stand led by Turner, Jones, and Dylan Mallett stopped Atlanta and gave the ball to Spring Hill on their own 2 yard line with less than 2 minutes in the game. A Rabbit penalty and a couple of Panther runs to keep the clock running resulted in a Panther victory.
Spring Hill will host Henderson next Thursday. Start time is set for 5:00.
