Game Recap

With Huntington only having a single subvarsity team, the Panthers hosted the Tenaha Tiger JV, who made the trip up from Shelby County. Tenaha received the opening kick and managed to move the ball to the Panther 42 before a fumble recovery by Matt Shankles gave the ball to Spring Hill.

Solid runs by Nick Stewart, Michael Marrs, and Carter Dixon moved the ball into Tiger territory. Dixon found Curtis Crowe on a 15 yard pass into the endzone for the first score of the evening. Grant Fisher’s PAT attempt was no good, and the first quarter ended with Spring Hill in front 6-0.

On the next Panther possession, Stewart again was a force around the left side. A Dixon fumble was recovered by Stewart to keep the possession. After a Dixon competion to Fisher, the Panthers were forced to punt. Crowe was able to fall on the ball after Tenaha mishandled the return and keep the Panthers in possession. A hard punishing run by Marrs allowed Spring Hill to find paydirt again for the TD. A Stewart conversion on the two point play gave the Panthers a 14-0 lead.

Tenaha was able to find some offense, moving the ball from their own 37 yard line to the Spring Hill 27. The Tigers scored from 12 yards out, and converted the two point play to make the score 14-8 at the half.

The second half started out with a solid run by Stewart around the right side. However, a Dixon fumble gave the ball to Tenaha around midfield. The Tigers scored on the drive and converted for two, giving Tenaha the lead 16-14.

The fourth quarter saw a lot of action as both teams traded scoring drives. The Tigers scored first in the quarter on a 23 yard run. They failed on the two-point conversion to increase their lead to 22-14. The ensuing kick-off return by Spring Hill almost scored as Crowe took the ball down from the Panther 10 to the Tiger 29. On fourth down from the Tenaha 23, Stewart ran around the left side for the score. The two point conversion was good as Dixon pitched on the option to Stewart.

After both teams exchanged punts, the Tigers were able to score on a 13 yard pass with 1:18 left on the clock. The Panthes offense was put on Stewart’s shoulders as he ripped off 12 yard and 8 yard runs, followed by a 43 yard run to the Tiger 4. Another Stewart run to the 2 preceded a Dixon intentional stoppage by spiking the pass to stop the clock with 2 seconds left. Dixon then crossed the goal line as the clock expired to tie the score at 28. The ensuing PAT attempt was blocked and the game ended in a tie.

The Panthers will be off next week as they prepare to host Gladewater to open the district schedule. The game will be on October 5th, starting at 5 pm in Panther Stadium.
