Spring Hill High School rushed for five touchdowns and the defense forced five turnovers in a 52-23 rout over Troup in the season opener for both teams on Friday.

On its opening possession, Spring Hill drove 61 yards in 11 plays. Quarterback Gage White rushed for 35 yards. Kiante Stoker finished the drive with a three-yard touchdown run.

After forcing Troup into a three-and-out, White hit Morgan Bradford for a 38-yard pass. Zach Tulpa rushed for 19 yards to the two-yard-line. Stoker scored his second rushing touchdown — which put the Panthers ahead 14-0 with 6:54 left in the first.

Four of the Panthers’ six possessions ended with a touchdown.

Troup (0-1) struggled possessing the ball in the first half – as it fumbled three times – with Spring Hill’s Jace Tiller returning one for a 31-yard defensive touchdown. The Tigers’ only score was a result of a fumble by Spring Hill. Trent Allen rushed for a four-yard touchdown – which cut Spring Hill’s lead to 21-7 early in the second quarter.

The Panthers scored the next 24 points in the first half. Tulpa rushed for two touchdowns. White connected with Dayson Adaway for a 16-yard touchdown.

Late in the first half, Troup didn’t touch a kickoff by Spring Hill – which gave the Panthers the ball at the Tigers 27. A pass for a loss of yards allowed the Tigers to hold Spring Hill to a field goal – which Efren Barcenas nailed from 35 yards.

In the second half, the Tigers took advantage of Spring Hill playing its reserves and scored two touchdowns. Ross converted a fourth-down with a 22-yard pass to Jordan Green in the third quarter. Ross threw his third touchdown of the game with a 12-yard pass to Kris Johnson. The Tigers gained two points when the ball was snapped over Barcenas’ head and he was tackled in the end zone. Spring Hill’s only score in the second half came on a three-yard run by Stoker in the third quarter for his third rushing touchdown. He finished the game with 64 yards.

Spring Hill is now 7-4 in its last 11 season openers, winning five of their last six to open the season — including a 26-15 win over Troup a year ago.

Spring Hill returns home to face Brownsboro. Troup will look for its first win next week at Ore City.
