The Panther Softball team almost clawed themselves out of a five run deficit, falling one run short in a 10-9 loss to Bullard on Wednesday evening. Spring Hill was able to score four runs on a Caton Hawkins walk, Sydney Johnson double, Maddie Malloy single, Lacey White single, and a sacrifice groundout by Avery Osburg to plate a runner. With the tie run on third base, and the winning run on second, the Panthers fell short on a game-ending strike out.
Bullard captured the lead in the first inning due to errors by the Panther defense. The Panthers got on the scoreboard when Jayla Landrum hit a towering shot over the center field scoreboard for a grand slam home run to put Spring Hill in front 4-2. Spring Hill scored another run in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Malloy to score Hawkins from third base.
However, Bullard scored the go ahead run in the fourth inning on a grand slam of their own, and extended the lead by scoring twice in the sixth and seventh innings, prior to the Spring Hill rally attempt.
Johnson led the Panthers at the plate, going 3 for 4, an RBI, and scoring two runs. Malloy, Landrum, and White each had two hits.
Kaylin McWhorter took the loss in the circle for Spring Hill. She pitched seven innings giving up six hits, 10 runs (3 earned), walking five, and striking out four.
With the holiday weekend approaching, the team will play Gladewater today (Thursday) at 6:30, following the JV game that begins at 5 pm.
