The Panther JV Softball team opened up the season in the Longview Lobo Tournament this past Thursday and Saturday. With the season opener against Waskom cancelled due to weather, this was the first opportunity for the team to see live action as a unit. They participated in five games over the course of the weekend, finishing with a record of 3-2.
The team opened up against the Lobo JV and had a very slow start to the season. With this being the first time that they had played as a unit, it took time for things to mesh. Unfortunately, the host Lobos seized the opportunity and defeated the Panthers 11-0.
Things turned around quickly for the Panthers as they had a much stronger showing against Ore City. The hitting came around for the Panthers during this game, but the time limit caught any chance of a comeback as the team fell to Ore City 5-4.
Saturday brought new life to the team as they opened up against cross-town rival Pine Tree in the early morning match-up. The Panthers started where they left off on Thursday and jumped out quickly on the Pirates, and soundly defeated Pine Tree 11-5. The day continued against the varsity team from New Summerfield. The Panthers kept their momentum rolling with a solid 12-1 defeat of the Hornets.
The final game of the day was against the Tyler Lee Red Raiders. The Panthers fought off the weariness of a long day, along with a Tyler Lee team that played hard. The Panthers took advantage of Raider mistakes and routed Lee by a score of 16-5.
Weather permitting, the team will face Tatum on Monday, February 20 at 4:30 at home.
