Chapel Hill Captures Lead Early to Defeat Panther Softball

Spring Hill fell behind early and couldn’t quite come back in an 11-6 loss to Chapel Hill on Tuesday evening. An early two-run home run for Chapel Hill and an error by Spring Hill started the Panthers off on the wrong end of the scoreboard after they took a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice ground out by Caton Hawkins to score Kaylin McWhorter from third base. McWhorter led the game off with a single to center, stole second base, and advanced to third on a passed ball.

The Panther offense quickly answered in the top of second inning when Lacey White singled to center field. Sarah Jones sacrificed White over to second base, where she was able to score on a single by Avery Osburg. Chapel Hill extended the lead 6-2 in the bottom of the inning, aided by errors by the Panthers. Sydney Johnson hit a solo home run over the fence in right center to bring Spring Hill to being down by only three, 6-3.

Chapel Hill was able to score runs in the next three innings to lead 11-3 before the Panthers made an attempt at a comeback. Hawkins singled to left field and scored on a triple by Maddie Malloy down the left field line. Malloy later scored on a sacrifice fly by Jayla Landrum to right field. Johnson, who was on first base due to a hit-by-pitch, advanced to third base on a double by White. Sarah Jones then hit a ground ball to second base and was safe, scoring Johnson. White was put out at home plate attempting to score to end the game.

The Panthers were able to get ten hits on the evening, led by White, who went 3-4. Johnson and McWhorter each had two hits, and Hawkins, Malloy, and Osburg each had one. McWhorter took the loss in the circle, giving up eleven runs (six earned) on ten hits. She walked six and had two strikeouts.

Spring Hill will finish the season on Friday, April 21, at home. The game will start at approximately 6:30 pm against Kilgore. The Panthers will be celebrating their four seniors: Kayla Crowe, Caton Hawkins, Kaylin McWhorter, and Avery Osburg.

The JV Panther team also fell in defeat to Chapel Hill 6-4. Harleigh Nelson had a big hit to score Paige Wilstead and Kristen Stewart in the first inning. Antiana Clayton had a base hit and scored on a walk by Nelson with the bases loaded. Hope Haney and Taylor Willingham also contributed with base hits for Spring Hill.
